There's supposed to be a ceasefire. Instead, Israel's military pressure on Hezbollah is growing. So too is political and diplomatic pressure on Lebanon's leaders. At the presidential palace, U.S. Deputy Special Envoy Morgan Ortegas met President Joseph Aoun. Ortegas didn't make a public statement, but U.S. officials have said they expect authorities to speed up the process of Hezbollah's disarmament and begin direct negotiations with Israel to end the state of war. Direct negotiations means political engagement with Israel and mutual recognition, which is a divisive issue in Lebanon. President Aoun had previously insisted that Israel stop its attacks and withdraw from hilltops along the southern border before there could be any discussions. He now says Lebanon is ready to engage in negotiations, but it has the right to choose the mechanism and format of the talks. It follows new warnings by the United States that Hezbollah may face a new confrontation with Israel if Lebanese authorities fail to act quickly to disarm the group in full, which Hezbollah has rejected. Also this month, the Israeli army carried out its largest military drills at the border with Lebanon since October 2023. The nature of the Israeli violations and attacks are different in terms of their scale, pace and the targets. All of these are concerning signs. They require vigilance. The Israeli escalation in Lebanon requires a regional effort to stop it. It appears that Lebanon, which has so far refused direct negotiations with Israel, has been put on notice.
