Lake Eyre in South Australia has reached its fullest state in over 50 years, attracting tourists. The influx of water, caused by floodwaters from Queensland, has transformed the usually dry salt pan into a vibrant spectacle.

Lake Eyre, located in the heart of Australia, is experiencing a rare natural event as it fills with water to levels not seen in more than half a century. The influx, resulting from floodwaters traveling south from Queensland, has turned the lake a striking red and drawn visitors from across the country and beyond. 

Local tourism has surged, with the outback town of William Creek seeing increased activity as people take flights to view the spectacle. The Lake Eyre Yacht Club marked its 25th anniversary with its largest-ever regatta, taking advantage of the unusually high water levels. The event is expected to last for several more weeks before water levels recede.

Lake Eyre reaches peak levels

In the heart of Australia, 800 kilometres north of Adelaide, a once-in-a-generation event is unfolding. Lake Eyre brimming with water and turning a spectacular shade of red. It's catching the attention of tourists who've travelled from far and wide. Spectacular. The colours and the vastness. It really does look like an inland ocean. Normally dry, the world's largest salt pan has been filling since May as floodwaters that caused devastation across large parts of Queensland make their way south. The lake now the fullest it's been in more than half a century. Planes were right there. We could camp across the road. There's a party here with wonderful food and great staff and we stayed a couple of days and did the flight. It was amazing. The outback town of William Creek also inundated with visitors taking to the skies to witness Australia's largest lake in all its glory. It's made us put on extra pilots and we're running bigger aircraft but it's not only that it's Murray, it's the Flinders Ranges, Cooper Pedy where it's increased the amount of visitations. Water levels are currently at around two metres but locals say there's only another six weeks left to see Lake Eyre at its best. The floodwaters are also filling nearby lake Killampapuna. The Lake Eyre Yacht Club launching a regatta involving around 50 sailboats to celebrate its 25th anniversary. I'm still recovering. It was the biggest regatta we've had by far. The first time they've been able to take to these inland seas since 2011. We know the water will come back one day. That's sort of like what makes it special and that's what makes our event special.
