Labour experts caution that government intervention could delay settlements, and if negotiations are contentious, Canadians may face cancelled flights or have to seek alternative travel options.

Passengers could get caught in the middle as some workers unionize for the first time and others try to catch up to peers after years under older contracts. How can a carrier, how can my employee group, you know, ask for 40% increases? That's unheard of. But, you know, they forget to tell the story about what happened in the last 10 years and they got nothing. When bargaining doesn't happen, you know, employee groups, they fall behind. It's not just with money. There's all sorts of items in collective agreements that become old and out of date. So this year could see other flight attendants trying to match gains at Air Canada. Those gains came after a strike. Though just a threat to walk out can lead to a deal, passengers can still face unpredictable cancellations. These rounds of collective bargaining go on all calendar year and whenever it's an opportune time to ultimately, you know, pull the lever in terms of creating some pressure, unions will do that. And as for government taking action, labor experts say that's a double-edged sword. If a company expects a strike won't be allowed, they aren't motivated to settle. And so as a result, employers, you know, will drag their feet at the bargaining table. Labor negotiations can be unpredictable, but if either side drives a hard bargain in 2026, Canadians might find their alternative literally is driving. Anis Hidari, CBC News, Calgary.
