As people head home from Labor Day weekend travel, 17.4 million flyers are estimated to be traveling, according to the TSA. CBS News senior transportation correspondent Kris Van Cleave has the latest.

Labor Day travel experienced a high volume of delays, primarily caused by severe weather in Dallas and a rare dust storm in Phoenix. Dallas Fort Worth Airport saw nearly a thousand flight cancellations and about 4,000 delays due to weather conditions, while Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport experienced hundreds of delayed flights with minimal cancellations. Newark Airport faced air traffic control staffing issues, leading to temporary ground stops and additional delays.

Despite these disruptions, most travelers eventually reached their destinations. In related developments, Southwest Airlines introduced a secondary cockpit barrier on a newly delivered aircraft, enhancing in-flight security. This feature, mandated for new planes but not yet fully required, aims to improve cockpit safety beyond current procedures.

Labor Day travel expected to break records

Cancellations remained pretty low. What we did see were a series of some travel troubles though in the form mainly of delays. The hardest hit area and this was weather-driven was in Dallas, home to Dallas Fort Worth Airport, one of the nation's busiest. That's where you saw you saw nearly a thousand flights canceled since Thursday and about 4,000 delays because of the same weather that was flooding streets and really causing headaches there. Newark Airport was struggling with some air traffic control staffing issues on and off throughout the weekend. It resulted in a ground stop for a bit yesterday. That was more a delay maker than a cancellation causer. And even here in the Phoenix area, we saw a very rare occurrence, a weather related ground stop here at Sky Harbor Airport last night as a fairly substantial dust storm moved through that delayed hundreds of flights but very few cancellations. So people were late perhaps but got where they were going. Last week we had to report on that dust storm and we use the word Haboob. I don't remember people calling it that when I lived there, Chris. To you and separate from that question, looking forward, Southwest Airlines added some safety features to their planes. Tell us about that as well. Sure. I think it's the meteorological term. Dust storm is what I remember as a kid. But either way, we had one and it came and it went. And so Southwest when they take delivery of a new airplane, they do the last sort of the final polish work here in the Phoenix area. We were able to get on board a newly delivered Southwest flight on Friday. It is the first in their fleet that has what's called a secondary cockpit barrier. And this is something that's been mandated since 2018 but delayed and delayed and in fact won't be fully required until next year on new airplanes. But the idea is to add a second. It's almost like a fence, if you will, like when the pilot comes out of the cockpit and that door is open. Right now, flight attendants use a cart to block the door. That's not maybe the most secure method. So this is the replacement for that, which will be a fence that will come across.
