It’s Labor Day in the U.S., which is a day off of work for many and thousands of people are using the day not to rest, but instead to protest. The country’s largest federation of labor unions is leading the movement aimed at the growing inequality between the very rich and the working class.

Protesters called for fair pay, health equity, and economic justice, noting that union membership has declined to just 10 percent of the workforce. 

Demonstrators criticized President Trump's tax policies, which they argue have disproportionately benefited the ultra-wealthy while resulting in cuts to food assistance and health care for the poorest Americans. Independent Senator Bernie Sanders led rallies against income inequality, highlighting reports that Trump has personally profited during his presidency. The protests underscored concerns about job losses, especially among African-American women, and the widening gap between the rich and the rest of the population.

In the U.S., there's a huge gap between the very rich and everyone else, and it's only getting wider. The nation's 800 billionaires, including Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, have a combined net worth of more than $6 trillion. That figure has more than doubled since President Trump's tax cuts first passed in 2017. The motion is adopted. With Trump's so-called one big beautiful bill now voted into law, those tax cuts are permanent. And while there are cuts across the board, the ultra-rich are poised to get even richer. But the poorest Americans are being hit hard because of cuts to food assistance and health care. It's estimated that some 13.7 million Americans will lose their health insurance as a result of Trump's tax law. Independent Senator Bernie Sanders, who has spent his political career railing against income inequality, has drawn thousands to his Fight the Oligarchy rallies. SEN. BERNIE SANDERS, R-KY, Sen. No, you're not going to destroy Social Security! You're not going to destroy Medicaid! Sanders and others say to see the inequities look no further than the president himself. The New Yorker recently estimated that Trump has used the presidency to make himself even richer to the tune of $3.4 billion. His tax returns, uncovered by The New York Times, showed he paid no income taxes for 10 of 15 years and paid no taxes during two of the four years of his first term.
