Labor Day protests broke out across the U.S. on Monday, challenging President Trump's recent economic and immigration policies. CBS News' Tom Hanson has the latest.

Labor unions, led by the AFL-CIO, and community groups organized nationwide protests under the banner 'Workers Over Billionaires' to voice opposition to the Trump administration's policies. Demonstrations took place at approximately a thousand locations, with participants criticizing cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, public education, and infrastructure, as well as recent job losses in manufacturing.

Protesters also condemned what they described as authoritarian policies, including the deportation of immigrant workers and the deployment of federal forces. A key demand was an increase in the federal minimum wage, which has remained at $7.25 since 2009. The relationship between the Trump administration and labor unions was described as contentious, highlighted by a recent executive order that stripped some union rights from federal employees.

Labor Day protests challenge Trump's policies

Unions and community groups organized Labor Day protests against the Trump administration on Monday. And these protests were dubbed Workers Over Billionaires and were led by the labor union AFL-CIO. Here's just a brief sampling of what was heard from officials who joined the protests. When there's an attack on our communities, when they're cutting Medicare, when they're cutting Medicaid, where they're trying to cut public education, where they've cut funding for all these infrastructure projects, an attack on our communities is an attack on our workforce. His reckless terrorists have resulted in 37,000 fewer manufacturing jobs in our economy, and more American workers got laid off last month than any month since the start of a pandemic. Wow. CBS News correspondent Tom Hanson is here with us in studio for more on this. Good morning, Tom. Good morning. Good to see you. So where exactly were these demonstrations and beyond what we heard there, what was the overall message? Yeah, well, the demonstrations played out over roughly a thousand different locations across the country. The things that were protested were almost as wide ranging as the number of locations of the protests themselves. But two main things that were constantly being protested across the board, the what what these protesters say are authoritarian policies, including the deportation of immigrant workers. And of course, most recently, the deployment of federal forces in the nation's capital. One of the biggest protests, for example, was in Chicago, where the president obviously has suggested that he wants to deploy federal forces there as well. Now, obviously, those were two of the huge things that were being protested here, but also something that we've heard time and time again on Labor Day protests, the minimum wage, $7.25 is the federal minimum wage right now. That hasn't changed since 2009. So obviously these union workers, these labor rights activists, they were calling for an increase in that as well. Wow. To have that minimum wage have been stuck where it is for so long is quite remarkable. Remind us the relationship between the Trump administration and labor unions overall. Where does that stand? Well, there's what the White House says the relationship is, and then there's what these protesters are saying the relationship is. We do know that the proof is in the pudding. There has been a push to end collective bargaining. There was an executive order that was passed just last month that stripped some union workers' rights for 445,000 federal employees. So that really points to a contentious relationship between the Trump administration and these union activist groups. That's an important data point. Tom Hanson, Across It All. Thank you very much.
