The Prime Minister's warned against demonising everyone who took part in Sunday's rallies, telling a Labor caucus meeting that doing so risked pushing protesters with legitimate concerns about immigration further down the rabbit hole towards far-right extremism. Conscious of public frustration over post-COVID migration levels and the impact on housing, the federal government today announced the permanent migration intake for this financial year will remain unchanged at $185,000. The figure should have been released months ago and was done so today with little commentary. It differs from the more contentious net overseas migration number which includes foreign students and temporary workers that is projected to fall sitting around pre-pandemic levels.
