Thursday is the first day of school for students in Los Angeles and the new academic year is kicking off with unprecedented protections for immigrant students.

Los Angeles public schools have started the academic year with new protections for immigrant students in response to heightened immigration enforcement across the state. These measures include increased school police presence at over 100 schools, community volunteers monitoring for enforcement activity, and staff training on how to respond if federal agents approach campuses.

Parents and students have also received 'Know Your Rights' brochures to inform them of their legal protections. The changes follow incidents where immigration agents have conducted raids near schools, including the wrongful detention of a student who was later released after being mistaken for another individual.

The changes at L.A. public schools follow ongoing immigration enforcement actions across the state, with masked agents conducting raids and making arrests in parking lots, at bus stops, and in one case, even confronting a student outside of a high school. Let's bring in CBS News correspondent Nydia Cavazos, who's live for us in Los Angeles. Nydia, what kinds of security measures are public schools taking for all this? Elizabeth, for over four months, immigration enforcement activity has been seen across L.A., and this is why the school system is now implementing measures so that families feel safe, especially those within the immigrant community, and the children can also feel safe coming back to school. And so this year, this time around, the school police is going to be on the ground across a hundred schools. This is also going to include school police who's going to be surveying the area and making sure that federal agents are not on school campuses. Community volunteers will also be doing the same, scouting and making sure that enforcement activity isn't taking place at or near campuses, and if that is occurring, then they'd be notifying students and family members so that they're aware of it. Now, staff at these schools are also trained on what to do if an ICE agent approaches school campuses, and parents and students have also been given Know Your Rights brochures. And Nydia, what else are we learning about that L.A. teenager who was wrongfully detained outside of a high school there? According to the 15-year-old's family, they say that agents allegedly told them that they had mistaken them for somebody else. They were on the lookout for another target, but instead arrested him. They ended up releasing him within that moment. But according to Customs and Border Protection officials, they say that this was part of a targeted operation. Agents were looking for an MS-13 pledge with prior criminal convictions. Nydia Cavazos, live for us in L.A., thank you so much, Nydia.
