It's a scene that many of us remember: Kevin McCallister in "Home Alone," casually strolling through the grocery store with $20 in hand. How much would that same grocery run really cost today?

A reporter visited a local market to recreate Kevin McCallister's iconic grocery run from the 1990 film 'Home Alone.' By purchasing the same items, the reporter found that the total cost has risen from $19.83 in 1990 to over $50 in 2025. 

The report highlights significant price increases for staples such as milk, bread, and household goods, with some items now costing several times their original price. According to recent Consumer Price Index data, prices have increased by 2.7% over the past year, contributing to the overall rise in grocery costs.

Kevin McCallister's grocery run would cost triple compared to 1990

Here I am outside of Mario's Westside Market, about to go down the list and get everything that Kevin McAllister did from the grocery store in 1990. He went in with $20 and came home with change. So let's see how I do in 2025. So the first thing on his list was half a gallon of milk. So let's go find the milk. What do you think milk costs, like a half a gallon of milk? A half a gallon of milk is like $3.49. About $4 would you say? A half a gallon cost Kevin around $1.34, but now it costs $3.49. The next item on the list is orange juice, and in 1990 it cost Kevin about $2. Looking at the price of orange juice now, it's more than doubled. And you can't forget the bread, a staple for Kevin's sandwiches. He got Wonder Bread, so so did I. In 1990, it only cost him about $0.70. Now, it's almost $5. It's crazy. I mean, for example, you could have got a can of cranberry sauce for about $0.89. Now it's $2.59. The most recent Consumer Price Index report shows over the last 12 months, prices have increased 2.7%. I couldn't find Kraft Mac and Cheese like Kevin had on his grocery run in 1990, which only cost him $1. But I did find Stouffer's. Be ready to dish out $6.59. He also got a roasted turkey TV dinner that only rang up to $1.50. Check out that price tag. He also needed some household items, like laundry detergent. He got Tide, which only cost him about $5. This is the smallest size I could find, and it's still $2 more. Is this toothbrush approved by the American Dental Association? I do not know. Dryer sheets, once $2, now $8.49. And that's on sale. Where's a tall person when you need one? Another item on Kevin's list, Saran Wrap. Cost him about $1.50, now $4.29. And a four-pack of toilet paper, not that bad. Kind of surprising. $2.99. The only thing I couldn't find was Toy Soldiers. But a quick Google search says bags of 25 would cost around $20. How much do you think you would spend for all of that today? I think we would spend about $43.62. Probably $50. I'd say about a good $8. Look at the economy we're living in. In total, Kevin's grocery haul in 1990 cost him $19.83. Today, that same list costs more than $50. So as shoppers wade through the price increases, it kind of makes you think, how would Kevin McAllister handle his shopping spree today?
