A technology startup in Kenya has launched SignVerse, an artificial intelligence-based application that translates English text into Kenyan Sign Language through an avatar. The developers plan to expand its capabilities to interpret spoken language into sign language in real time, potentially benefiting nearly half a million sign language users in the region and more globally as additional sign languages are added.

SignVerse has gained recognition from American universities, UN agencies, and major tech firms such as Microsoft and Google. While students at a school for deaf learners noted the app currently lacks the vocabulary and facial expressions of a human signer, developers estimate it will take about six months for the platform to become fluent. The initiative is seen as a significant step toward making digital communication more accessible for the deaf community.

We met the team behind it at Africa's leading conference on technology for people with disabilities. They told us it'll help people in conversation and online. If our systems aren't meant to be accessible to them or don't include sign language within their platform, that means they're cut off education, health care and all the access and resources that they need. Artificial intelligence helps the platform learn signs and put them together and connect them with the equivalent parts of speech. It's attracted recognition and support from American universities, UN agencies and tech giants like Microsoft and Google. Presenting new technology in conferences is only part of the story. The question is how will users in the community react. So we've come with the SignVerse team to a school for deaf learners to find out. The learners here say they've all used smartphones before, but they've never seen anything like this. After trying it, they told us it doesn't have the vocabulary or face expressions of a person. SignVerse says the platform knows about 2,000 words, and it'll take about six months to become fluent. Everyone here is curious about how technology will change the future. The learners say subtitles have made YouTube videos more accessible, but they've never come across an application specifically designed to help them.
