In the heart of one of Nairobi's most impoverished neighborhoods, where corrugated iron roofs stretch across the Mukuru slum, a quiet revolution is unfolding.

Wajukuu Arts, based in Nairobi's Mukuru district, is a community-driven collective that uses art to inspire young people and provide alternatives to gang violence. The initiative offers training in photography, videography, web design, and art, reaching dozens of youth and over a hundred children through its programs.

Founded in 2003 by a group of teenage boys, Wajukuu Arts has evolved from a survival initiative into a vibrant center for creativity and mentorship. The collective addresses local challenges, including economic hardship and family instability, by using art as a tool for emotional expression and community transformation.

Located beneath the corrugated iron roofs of Nairobi's Zimpoveri Stumkuru district, Wadjuku Arts is a community-based collective that utilizes art to transform narratives of struggle and survival. We have a lot of stories about our community whereby women are left by their husbands and so they struggle a lot on a living life. So you find they have to hustle, to pass a hard time on maybe survival, and also feeding their kids. And so when you come to our community you find a lot of young mothers, they don't have fathers or they don't have husbands. So my art always, when I do art I always do about what they pass through. Over the years Wadjuku Arts has transitioned from a survival initiative to a vibrant community center for creativity and mentorship. The organization currently trains 30 young individuals in photography, videography, web design and art, while also reaching 150 children through its educational and artistic programs. In formal places, because of economical struggle, parents do not pay attention to what their kids are going through, and emotional struggle, mental struggle, this comes like a secondary need and mostly when it's already like a big problem. But with art I think it's a tool of processing the inner burning, the inner thoughts, the inner doubts, and also the inner struggles that we face even without sharing with others. Established in 2003, the collective was initially created by more than 40 teenage boys in search of survival and self-expression.
