Museveni, who has led the country since 1986 and is now 81 years old, is seeking another term following constitutional changes that removed age and term limits.

Supporters of Museveni cite ongoing peace and improved societal conditions as reasons for their continued backing, while authorities have detained hundreds of opposition supporters in advance of the election. The upcoming vote will see Museveni challenged by Bobby Wine, a 43-year-old pop star turned politician.

With just days to go to Uganda's general election, streets in the capital Kampala are decked out in campaign posters for incumbent President Yoweri Museveni. The 81-year-old leader of the National Resistance Movement Party, who's ruled the country since 1986, is seeking re-election. Despite his age and growing concern about rights abuses, his supporters remain strong. Those people who are promising us a new country, which we don't know. We are not so sure that maybe they want to remove this country which we are seeing right now and they put on maybe a country which is golden. We don't know what kind of a new country they are talking about. But what we are sure of, we are sure of this country, we enjoy our country, we enjoy what our president has done for us and we still enjoy the peace we have, the security we have. One of Africa's oldest leaders, Museveni's government has changed the constitution twice to remove age and term limits to allow him to stand in the polls. We do love our president so much because he has done a lot of things to Uganda. You go to Uganda when you are backward, but during the time he has spent here in Uganda, very many things he has done for us. We have peace, we ladies we were not known in the community, but now we are free to do what we want. So very many things to mention but a few. The authorities have detained hundreds of opposition supporters ahead of the 15th of January election, which will again pit Museveni against the 43-year-old pop star turned politician Bobby Wine.
