He's the wizard of the Kremlin, a character inspired by Vladislav Surkov, businessman, politician, and considered the Russian president's eminence. Olivia Assia's film retraces Surkov's career and, more broadly, 20 years of Russian politics from the fall of the Soviet Union to the annexation of Crimea in 2014. The film is very much about how modern politics, 21st century politics, were invented. And part of that evil raised from the rise to power of Vladimir Putin in Russia. So I think we made a movie about what politics has become and the very scary and dangerous situation we all feel we are in. Assia's cast British actor Jude Law as Vladimir Putin. Law emphasized that the film is not a simple hit piece on its subject. This was a story that was going to be told intelligently and with nuance and consideration and we weren't looking for controversy for controversy's sake. And more importantly, I think it was key for me to remember that it's a character within a much broader story. Adapted from the acclaimed debut novel by Swiss-Italian writer Giuliano De Impoli, himself once an adviser to former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, The Wizard of the Kremlin will go on general release in France next January.
