The legal action, filed by KP Law at the English High Court, represents 3,000 people who claim their ovarian cancer or other diseases were caused by using J&J's baby powder between 1965 and 2023. The lawsuit asserts that the product contained carcinogenic fibers, including asbestos, which is linked to mesothelioma. The estimated value of the lawsuit against J&J and its former consumer health subsidiary Kenview is just over $1.3 billion. Kenview has stated that J&J baby powder did not contain asbestos and does not cause cancer. J&J discontinued its talc-based baby powder in the U.S. in 2020 and in the UK in 2023, switching to a cornstarch-based product. The company has attempted to resolve similar lawsuits in the U.S. through bankruptcy proceedings, but these efforts have been rejected by federal courts.

The value of the lawsuit against J&J and a subsidiary of its former consumer health unit Kenview is estimated at just over $1.3 billion. Kenview said in a statement that J&J baby powder did not contain asbestos and does not cause cancer. J&J stopped selling TARC-based baby powder in the U.S. in 2020, switching to a cornstarch product. It did the same in the U.K. in 2023. The company has sought to resolve the tens of thousands of similar lawsuits in the U.S. through bankruptcy, but federal courts rejected the strategy three times.
