Her remarks come after the UN's peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, accused Israeli forces of intentionally firing at its positions. Meloni emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of all UN peacekeeping soldiers and called for efforts to bolster UNIFIL while maintaining its impartiality.

Italy contributes approximately 1,000 troops to UNIFIL, making it one of the primary participants in the UN's peacekeeping efforts in Lebanon. Recently, five UN peacekeepers were injured in several incidents, prompting UNIFIL to demand explanations from Israel for what it described as "shocking violations," including forced entry. However, Israel has denied targeting the UN forces intentionally and advised the peacekeepers to leave Lebanon for their safety. Despite this, UNIFIL intends to maintain its presence in the country and has refrained from using violence, emphasizing the importance of reducing tensions.

Prime Minister Meloni's visit to Lebanon marks her as the first foreign leader to travel to Beirut since Israel's ground offensive against Hezbollah began last month. During her visit, she reiterated her support for Israel, although she urged the country to adhere to humanitarian laws. Meloni also indicated plans to engage in further discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu upon her return.

Italy's Giorgia Meloni slammed attacks on United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, after the UN forces accused Israeli troops of deliberately firing at its positions. I consider targeting UNIFIL unacceptable and I ask once again that all parties strive to ensure that at all times the safety of each of these soldiers is guaranteed. Only by strengthening UNIFIL while maintaining its impartiality will we be able to turn the page. With some 1,000 troops there, Italian soldiers form one of the main contingents of the UN's peacekeeping force in Lebanon. Last week, five peacekeepers were wounded in a series of incidents and UNIFIL has pushed Israel for explanations for what they called shocking violations, including forced entry. Israel denies deliberately targeting the UN peacekeepers and has told them to leave for their own safety. UNIFIL, though, vows to stay put in Lebanon and that its forces wouldn't defend themselves using violence. We are under Chapter 6 of the Security Council, of course self-defence can be used but we also have to be very pragmatic on when to use it and how to use it because we don't want to become part of the conflict and using force that could trigger more violence, this is not something that we are planning to do so we are trying to decrease the tensions. Alongside Germany, Italy has been a staunch European supporter of Israel, though Maloney has repeatedly called for it to comply with humanitarian law. Maloney told reporters that after wrapping up her visit, she plans to call for fresh talks with her Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu.
