Lebanese civilians caught in the middle of a war they don't want. The cross-border temperature has flared and the blue line is dripping with red. Our UN peacekeeping mission there has reported a concerning shift in the exchanges of fire between the Israeli armed forces and armed groups in Lebanon, including targeting of areas far from the blue line. The recent escalation is dangerous indeed and should stop. Israel's attacks on southern Lebanon have caused the worst single-day civilian death toll since hostilities with Hezbollah resumed. The Lebanese group has been trading fire with Israeli outposts for months in support of Hamas in Gaza. But that fire has been creeping deeper and deeper into territory away from the front line and fear of an all-out escalation has hit a new peak. We continue to believe that there is a diplomatic path forward and we will continue to push forward to try to resolve this issue diplomatically so both Israelis and Lebanese can return to their homes. Rhetoric from the warring sides, however, is much less optimistic. In the end we will be ready for war. Hezbollah will not be present here on the fence. Aggression on this front will only stop when the aggression on Gaza stops as part of a clear agreement with the Palestinian resistance. Tens of thousands of civilians have been displaced on both sides of the border in eerie echoes of the last major conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006. Peace plans have been proposed as deaths mount. But the sphere of violence is still expanding and the Middle East is racing toward a critical juncture. It may not be able to back away from.
