Gantz had previously warned that he would resign if Netanyahu did not commit to specific plans, including the governance of post-war Gaza and the return of hostages. "We failed the result test. We have not yet managed to bring many of the abductees home," Gantz stated, expressing an apology to the families of those still held captive. He also urged the Prime Minister to set a date for new elections.

While the resignation does not pose an immediate threat to Netanyahu’s majority in the 120-seat parliament, it could necessitate greater dependency on his right-wing partners. Experts suggest this shift might result in more extreme decision-making within the government. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, a far-right figure, has already expressed a desire to join the war cabinet.

Today, I want to apologise to the families of the hostages. We did a lot. We failed the result test. We have not yet managed to bring many of the abductees home. Gantz also urged the Israeli Prime Minister to set a date for elections. The resignation does not pose an immediate threat to Netanyahu, who still holds a majority of 64 in the 120-seat parliament. But according to experts, he will now have to rely more heavily on his right-wing partners. Gantz was a moderate voice in the cabinet. And with him gone, it sort of tugs all the decisions to the right and to the more extreme. The second problem is that Netanyahu, with the success of the hostage rescue, is more likely to dig in and to say, it's better to shoot now and negotiate later. Let's follow my lead rather than Gantz's. The third problem is, look, there's very little trust between government officials from the United States and Netanyahu. Not long after the announcement, far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said he had issued a demand to join the war cabinet. Despite slipping in the polls in recent months, Gantz is viewed as a favourite to lead a new coalition if early elections are called.
