Despite these proposed measures, some residents and advocacy groups remain concerned about the enforcement of current rules and the potential for excessive exemptions, which could undermine the curfew's effectiveness. The proposed regulations have not yet been approved by Transport Canada.

An organization called Les Polluets de Montréal-Trudeau has long been pushing for an eight-hour curfew restricting night flights. If you can't sleep at night, there's no way you can have a quality of life. Now, Aéroports de Montréal has a new proposal. It wants to ban all aircraft from taking off and landing at Montréal-Trudeau for five hours between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. ADM says within that new proposal, restrictions will gradually start at 11 p.m. for the noisier planes. In the morning between 6 and 8 a.m., only the quieter aircrafts would be allowed to fly. But some worry the current rules aren't being enforced enough. This way of managing the night hours was an open bar. As it stands now, heavier planes aren't supposed to be flying overnight. But in 2024, the airport authority confirms that 30% were exempted and allowed to fly. It says the reasons were beyond the airline's control, like medical emergencies or weather conditions. This delay between 1 o'clock and 6 is important, but it will be determined as to how many exemptions because if you give exemptions out willy-nilly, then clearly, despite this so-called curfew, you will be having a large number of planes coming and disturbing people. De Souza says he's also hoping the proposed changes won't result in long lines of flights taking off or landing just before 1 a.m. and right after 6 a.m., hours where people are still in bed. Despite the airport's efforts to curb noise, some worry they will still feel the effect with all the plans to expand service. Aéroports de Montréal insists that these days, airplanes are able to carry more passengers and their engines are getting quieter. Transport Canada has yet to approve the proposed noise reduction regulations.
