Yet, rampant inflation and international sanctions may dampen this year's spirits.

Residents of Tehran are celebrating the centuries-old Yalda festival, a time for family gatherings and traditional foods, but this year's festivities are subdued due to economic difficulties. International sanctions, high inflation, and a weakened currency have led to soaring prices for staple items like pomegranates and nuts, making it harder for many to observe the holiday as in previous years.

According to local vendors and shoppers, the cost of traditional foods has doubled, and many families are unable to afford the usual spread. The central bank recently reported an annual inflation rate of 41 percent, further reducing purchasing power and altering the way Iranians mark this important cultural event.

Stands are full with fruit and vegetables, as locals here in Tehran shop to celebrate the festival of Yalda. But this year's mood is sombre. Yalda has been around for a long time for families to gather, but with these high prices, it's not like it used to be when people could invite their whole family. Nuts and fruits, especially red fruits like watermelon and pomegranate, are traditionally eaten during the celebration, held on the longest night of the year. But Iran has also been under international sanctions for years over its nuclear programme. The price of these pomegranates has doubled and sales are down, according to one fruit seller. Earlier this month, the central bank announced yearly inflation was running at 41 percent. Local currency has also fallen sharply, meaning buying fruit for the festivities may not be an option for some. Unfortunately due to the recent events, the outbreak of war and the sharp rise of the dollar, people's purchasing power has decreased a lot. That's why we can't really see many of the items that we used to see in previous years on every table. Yalda has been celebrated in the region for centuries. Families and friends stay awake all night to eat, drink and honour the 14th century Persian poet Hafez, while waiting for the new light of the next morning.
