In Sudan's al-Salam Guz camp, women displaced by conflict have formed a support network to help each other cope with trauma. Led by Amal, a former emotional support nurse who fled Khartoum in 2023, these gatherings provide a safe space for women to share their experiences and receive psychological counseling.

Amal, who has also suffered personal loss during the conflict, has opened her home as a free clinic for psychological support. With nearly 7,000 women and girls in the camp, many recount harrowing stories of violence and loss, but Amal's efforts have brought relief and comfort to many.

Amid the misery of displacement, an unlikely moment of merriment and social interaction. The participants traumatized women displaced from conflict areas. The small event is the idea of one woman who decided to do something to alleviate the suffering among female victims of violence. We gather around coffee and tea and serve sweets and dates. The purpose is to talk about our problems. We discover a lot of things during these chats, such as cases of rape, mental stress, trauma, depression, and we manage to help with some of that. Amal is a mother of four children from Khartoum. She escaped the fighting there in 2023. A former emotional support nurse, she says she's been looking for a way to resume her previous role of helping people in need. Her wish was fulfilled when she met with huge numbers of women fleeing from Darfur and Kordofan. It's been a year since Amal arrived here and started providing support to women at the camp. Now, her private home has become an open clinic for free psychological counseling. Amal says she herself has struggled with stress. She didn't only lose her home, but also her husband, who's been missing since the beginning of the conflict in 2023. But she says her personal pain is dwarfed by some of the heart-wrenching stories related by her patients. Such as the case of a mother and her daughter, who were both raped in al-Fashr, or tragic stories of loss of children and siblings, or severe torture. With nearly 7,000 women and girls in al-Salam Guz camp, all with difficult memories to contend with, Amal has her hands full around the clock.
