A coroner's inquest will examine the deaths of five people after a car mounted a kerb outside the Royal Daylesford Hotel, focusing on the safety of outdoor dining.

An inquest has been announced into the deaths of five people who were killed when a car driven by William Swale, who suffered a severe hypoglycemic attack, crashed into a beer garden outside the Royal Daylesford Hotel. The incident resulted in the deaths of Pratibha Sharma, her daughter Anvi, husband Jatin Kumar, and their friends Vivek Bhatia and his son Vihan, with others injured and many traumatised.

The coroner's court will focus on the safety of patrons in public spaces and the responsibilities of type 1 diabetic drivers, including glucose monitoring and medical guidelines. The criminal case against Swale was previously dismissed due to insufficient evidence. Over 60 witnesses, including medical and road safety experts, are expected to testify at the inquest, which aims to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Inquest announced into Daylesford crash that killed five

It's been almost two years since Vikas Sharma lost his sister and niece. His grief is still overwhelming. We're still in the same place. They were sitting in a busy beer garden outside the Royal Dalesford Hotel in November 2023 when a BMW mounted the kerb and drove through the crowd. Pratibha Sharma, her 9-year-old daughter Anvi and husband Jatin Kumar were killed, along with their friend Vivek Bhatia and his 11-year-old son Vihan. For us, it's no justice. Driver William Swale was found to be suffering a severe hypoglycemic attack. A type 1 diabetic, his blood sugar levels were found to be below 1.1. The coroner's court heard 10 blood glucose alarms were sent to his phone in the hour before the crash. He was charged with 14 offences. The prosecution argued as a long-term diabetic, he would have been aware of the risks. But the case against him was thrown out in September after a magistrate deemed it too weak to proceed to trial. There was not even a single charge which was framed or approved. So it's very upsetting for the whole community. Today the coroner's court announced an inquest into their deaths will take place in March next year. Medical assisting Rishi Nathwani KC told the hearing it will focus on the safety of patrons sitting as they were at the Royal Dalesford Hotel and safe driving by type 1 diabetic drivers including glucose monitoring and guidelines. It goes without saying that this incident caused the death of 5 people and injured others as well as traumatised many more. More than 60 witnesses are expected to be called during the 10-day inquest including a road safety expert and an endocrinologist. So far driver William Swale has exercised his right not to provide a statement to the coroner. To avoid these sort of incidents in the future, I think it's very important if we would have come and come at the front and give the evidence in the court. The full scope of the inquest will be set out in coming months. The families of those killed say it won't bring them justice.
