A 32-year-old Brooklyn man, Oremus Furse, died at Rikers Island after being found seriously ill in his cell at the Otis Bantam Correctional Center. He was transported to Mount Sinai Queens Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Furse was awaiting a court appearance on burglary charges. The New York City Correction Commissioner expressed condolences and stated that the incident will be fully investigated. This marks the 13th inmate death at Rikers Island this year.

A new this afternoon, we're learning another inmate has died at Rikers Island. Authorities say it happened around 2 a.m. inside the Otis Bantam Correctional Center where an officer spotted a 32-year-old man, Oremus Furse, in his cell looking seriously ill. He was taken to Mount Sinai Queens Hospital where he was pronounced dead. We're told Furse is from Brooklyn and was said to appear at Kings County Court on December 11th, just days away, facing multiple charges of burglary. The New York City Correction Commissioner released the following statement saying, quote, We extend our deepest condolences to his friends and family. The safety of everyone in our care is always our foremost concern and we will fully investigate this tragedy, end quote. This death marks the 13th inmate death on Rikers Island so far this year.
