Canada’s overall inflation rate dropped in July thanks largely to lower gas prices, but grocery prices increased twice as fast as other consumer products.

Grocery prices in Canada have increased by 3.4% year over year, which is twice the rate of general inflation. Items like fruit, chocolate, and coffee have experienced the most significant price hikes, with coffee prices spiking over 29%, partly due to U.S. tariffs on imports from countries such as Brazil. While these tariffs have led to higher prices in large stores, they have also provided an opportunity for local Canadian coffee roasters who source beans outside the U.S. 

Despite these grocery price increases, overall inflation in Canada has cooled, primarily due to lower gas prices following the removal of the consumer carbon tax. However, many Canadians continue to feel the strain of rising food costs on their household budgets.

Inflation cools, except at the grocery store

At grocery stores across Canada, a familiar story. The cost to fill carts and cars with groceries on the rise again. It's absurd. It's ridiculous. It's really kind of cut into the variety of things you can have at your table. It's outrageous. And what are you going to feed your kids? Crap? No. Processed food? Right. So, you know, you want to buy the good stuff. Grocery prices rose 3.4% year over year last month. Twice as fast as the general rate of inflation. Food like fruit, chocolate and coffee rising the most. Those prices have increased quite significantly and that's just due to supply, demand, weather, a whole bunch of factors that are kind of outside of Canada's control but unfortunately still affect Canadian consumers. Coffee prices, which spiked by more than 29%, made worse by U.S. tariffs. With the tariff situation on the countries, Brazil for example, it's a 50% tariff. It's just causing a lot of uncertainty. Those tariffs mostly hit prices in big stores where much of the coffee comes from the U.S. Leveling the playing field for Canadian coffee roasters who don't import their beans from the states. Coffee prices are high in the supermarket but could there be a silver lining for local roasters like yourself? Absolutely. What I see is it takes away any reason not to try specialty coffee. If lower priced coffee is the same price as specialty, now's the time to give it a chance. The good news overall, inflation has cooled, driven by lower gas prices after the consumer carbon tax was scrapped. That's one of the positives that I've seen so far but hopefully it keeps going down and not up for the winter. A break at the pump even as the cost of groceries continues to break some budgets.
