Hospitals in Sydney are seeing a significant increase in injuries related to e-bike accidents, with a 360 percent rise in crashes over the past five years. In the first seven months of 2025 alone, 233 injuries and four fatalities were reported, prompting concern among medical professionals and authorities.

In response, the government is reducing the legal power limit for e-bikes from 500 to 250 watts and increasing enforcement, including the destruction of illegally modified bikes. Schools are also restricting e-bike use due to safety concerns, as incidents involving young riders continue to rise.

If you fall off on the road you can develop serious injuries. And with injuries climbing the government is cracking down. When it comes to private bike use the sort of behavior we've seen we will not tolerate. Under current laws e-bikes can't exceed 500 watts but that legal limit will be cut to 250. The opposition says that's not enough. Accountability shouldn't start with that trip to the emergency room it should start with this government keeping people safe. This incident at Long Reef on Friday just one of many recent displays of dangerous riding by young people. Children and teens are increasingly riding e-bikes to school but schools are cracking down banning and restricting them from campuses due to safety concerns. And those growing risks are now prompting a tougher response. Only days ago Western Australian Police crushed 36 seized e-bikes. You can expect to see some bikes crushed in New South Wales. As e-bikes surge in popularity so too does the push to make sure every ride doesn't end in a hospital bed. Emma Olsen, 10 News.
