A sports memorabilia collector has created a unique piece by assembling the autographs of five of the most iconic athletes from different sports—Babe Ruth, Tom Brady, Lionel Messi, Wayne Gretzky, and Michael Jordan—on a single album page. The process began with a Babe Ruth autograph and expanded as the collector sought out opportunities to add signatures from living legends, including a chance meeting with Tom Brady at an auction, arranging private signings with Lionel Messi, and connecting with Wayne Gretzky through mutual friends.

The final signature, Michael Jordan's, was obtained through a combination of luck and mutual respect among the athletes. The collector described the experience as rewarding and highlighted the genuine reaction from Tom Brady upon seeing the completed piece. The collector views this achievement as a significant milestone but remains open to future collecting opportunities.

Iconic collection of autographs on a single page

When I bought the Babe Ruth signed album page and I was looking at it before sending it in to get authenticated and slabbed, it just looked kind of empty and it looked lonely. And I realized I was seeing Tom Brady at the Sotheby's auction the next week. So I said, you know what, maybe maybe there's some ways to kind of spruce up this Babe Ruth autograph. You know, I positioned myself to sit behind him. And when he got up to leave, I noticed that he hadn't won any of the auction. So I said, hey, Tom, I don't want you to leave empty handed. So I handed him a 1981 ticket to the 1981 NFC Conference Championship game, which he famously attended to watch the Dwight Clark catch. Then I asked for a quick favor and he obliged and his eyes definitely lit up when he saw what I was having him sign. We've got Babe Ruth now, we've got Tom Brady. What's going through your mind then? Did you already have a plan of what you wanted this to look like? So at that point, I knew that Leo Messi had regular private signings with a company called Icons. And I also know that Wayne Gretzky is a pretty gracious signer. If you can just cross paths with him, fortunately, just a few months later, Wayne was at was in Chicago for the Winter Classic and through some mutual friends, I was able to get him to sign the piece, the piece of paper, the album page. And then literally just a couple of months later, Messi and his autograph company announced that they were having a private signing and I was able to pay a fee and send it in for him to sign. Man, tell me, tell me how that happened when you had the four guys and the one person missing was Michael Jordan. How did that come about and how did you end up meeting MJ and getting it completed? You know, it was a lot of luck and there's some aspects of this story that are kind of better kept between friends. But look, I think at the end of the day, Michael has a lot of respect for his super collectors, but more so is a lot of respect for the other guys that are on this piece of paper. And I think that that's kind of what motivated him to want to make sure it got done. He was the first guy to sign it once you acquired the Babe Ruth album page. How cool was it to then show it to him again and have actually Tom Brady reveal the completed piece? Well, so, yes, I definitely wanted to do kind of a big reveal and felt like Tom was the right person to show it to. To me, the fact that Tom didn't know what I was showing him really was the icing on the cake because we got a really genuine reaction from him. And quite frankly, that's what helped me realize just how big of a deal this was to see Tom Brady, someone with seven Super Bowl rings, you know, for him to react the way he did was definitely special. How does it feel just to have this one of a kind piece now in your collection? I don't want to say this is a capstone. I mean, as a collector, you're never done. It just might mean you change directions a little bit. So the fact that I've had so many people reach out, that's been really fun. And the whole process has been very rewarding, but I'm always looking for what's sort of next in my journey as a collector.
