Tonight, in a bout faced by the Trump administration, CBS News has learned the White House is pausing most immigration raids on farms, hotels, and eateries. The concern? It's hurting business. CBS's Elise Preston is in Los Angeles with that part of the story. Elise. Jerrica, despite the abrupt change by the Trump administration, there are 56,000 people in detention facilities across the country. That's a record, and a reason why there is so much apprehension here in Los Angeles. We found a common thread here at LA's Fashion District. It is fear of raids by immigration agents. The business is so bad. Karina Sanchez owns an apparel store. It's one of more than 4,000 independent businesses in the district. It's an area that depends on immigrant labor. Customers and workers alike are becoming scarcer. One day last week, Sanchez did just $15 in sales. So I'm very scared. I'm very scared because I lose everything. I don't have nothing in my pocket. Everything I put for my brand. ICE now averages 1,300 arrests per day. His social media video of workplace sweeps in Omaha, Nebraska and Oxnard, California have stoked the anxiety. The community is in fear. We met Alonzo Garcia outside the federal building in downtown LA. He told us he is a first-generation Mexican-American. Nobody is coming out. The California economy and maybe even the U.S. economy is suffering. Can the U.S. operate without immigrants? I think it would be very difficult for the U.S. to go forward without immigrants because there are some tough jobs out there. They are hard. They are backbreaking. It's not easy to find people to do that kind of work. Here in Los Angeles, a ninth day of protest was largely peaceful, but hours before the city's curfew began, this area was declared an unlawful assembly. Officers moved in with tactics, including smoke bombs and tear gas to clear the area. Meanwhile, U.S. Marines stood by guarding the federal property where many arrested by ICE are being detained.
