While current conditions in San Juan remain calm, meteorologists expect rough waves and heavy rain as the hurricane approaches. Erin is rapidly intensifying due to warm sea surface temperatures and minimal wind shear, with the potential to strengthen to a category four storm. The hurricane is expected to remain offshore from the US mainland, but could impact smaller islands such as Bermuda. Forecasters are closely monitoring the situation as high pressure and a cold front in the Atlantic are influencing the storm's path.

Hurricane Erin to hit Puerto Rico with heavy rain

All right, let's take a live look right now at San Juan, Puerto Rico. The waves there, they're looking calm so far, but the island is expected to see rough waves and that's because Aaron will move past as a hurricane. Meteorologist Jessica Burch is here now with more. Sunday morning, that's when we're anticipating it just north of Puerto Rico to push through. At that point, forecasted at a category three. And what's happening right now, this is the first named hurricane of the season, but it's the fifth named storm of the season, meaning up until now we've seen tropical storms here and there, but this one's rapid intensify or it's rapidly intensifying and we're watching that happen right now in live time. Now it's going to push north of Puerto Rico, well offshore of the east coast, but it is worth noting that this potentially could impact smaller communities or smaller islands, I should say, like Bermuda. And here's where Hurricane Aaron is currently at. Now those max sustained winds in the center, they're starting to strengthen as this continues to hit warmer sea surface temperatures. It allows for it to grow. That's the rapid intensification that I was talking about, and it's not hitting any wind shear, which means it's only going to strengthen even more, potentially up to a category four as we head into early next week. Well, the good news about this, there's a couple of things I want to talk about. High pressure is out in the Atlantic and that's kind of driving it in a counterclockwise direction or excuse me, in a clockwise direction. But at the same time, a cold front is pushing off the east coast. So even though this hurricane would want to move towards warmer sea surface temperatures, which would be along that coastline, this is actually going to help assist it stay well offshore. So it's not going to impact the States, but it is a very strong hurricane and we do keep a close eye on it here in the weather center for now. Back to you. All right, Jess.
