Beryl has been downgraded to a tropical storm after making landfall early on Monday in Texas as a Category 1 hurricane, leaving widespread damage. At least two people in the state have been killed and more than 2 million people are without power.

Hurricane Beryl has been downgraded to a tropical storm after making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane in Texas. The storm caused widespread damage, leaving at least two people dead and more than 2 million without power.

Rescue operations took place after the storm hit, including the rescue of a man stranded on his truck in a flooded roadway in Houston. The hurricane brought strong winds and bands of rain, damaging buildings and tearing down utility lines, leaving downtown windows shattered and transformers blown.

Houston Mayor John Whitmer, who was among those without power, urged residents to shelter in place and promised that recovery efforts would begin immediately. Beryl made landfall east of Port Lavaca with sustained winds of 80 miles per hour, causing structural damage from Freeport to Galveston and resulting in a storm surge that swamped residential areas.

As the storm moved out of Houston toward Louisiana and Arkansas, it continued to bring heavy rain and flooding, though the winds had started to diminish.
