More than 600 people have died after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan, the Taliban has confirmed, with tremors felt as far as neighbouring Pakistan

A strong and shallow earthquake struck near Jalalabad, Afghanistan, with its epicentre located approximately 30 kilometres from the city. The quake, which occurred around midnight, caused widespread disruption in both urban and rural areas, with tremors felt as far as Pakistan's capital. 

Rescue operations have been hampered by the remoteness and poor condition of roads, particularly at night. The death toll is estimated to be in the hundreds and is expected to rise. The region had recently experienced severe flooding, and ongoing aftershocks are adding to the difficulties faced by local residents.

The biggest problem, access with the areas hit, remote and hard to reach. A lot of those roads may be unpaved and so it's much more difficult to drive on at night. Dawn brought the sound of helicopters as the injured were carried in arms to hospital. The death toll estimated to be in the hundreds is expected to climb. This same area had been hit by flooding only days before the earthquake and with aftershocks still being felt, disaster after disaster compounds the despair of those who live here.
