The humanitarian situation in Sudan's northern state has deteriorated following the Rapid Support Forces' (RSF) takeover of el-Fasher. Displaced residents, many of whom fled after months of siege, are now living in overcrowded camps with limited access to food, blankets, and medical care. 

Families report sharing mats, sleeping outdoors, and struggling to feed children due to shortages of essentials and lack of health services. The Sudanese government has promised to relocate the displaced to a larger camp, but many continue to endure harsh conditions while hoping for improved support.

When Azahir Saleh fled the paramilitary rapid support forces in her home city of Al-Fasher in Sudan's north Darfur, she came to seek refuge in Hoshmalit camp in northern state. She'd hoped to find shelter and some basic essentials. Instead, she found herself sharing a mat with other families and facing shortages. We need blankets because the weather's cold at night. We need food. We used to eat animal fodder in Al-Fasher. We need soap to wash ourselves and our clothes. There's not enough medicine for people here, even though there are a lot of elderly and children who get sick. We don't get nutritious meals and everyone who comes from Al-Fasher needs nutrition because of the hunger we've endured. The camp was formerly a bus station, but now houses hundreds of families from Al-Fasher. The city came under RSF control after nearly 18 months of siege that saw the group prevent food and humanitarian aid from coming in. As the group seized Al-Fasher, those who could fled. Some came to seek refuge here in a camp already sheltering other displaced people. Overcrowding in this camp means many families are living like this, out in the open. Some have arrived in the lead up to the fall of Al-Fasher and in the following days, but some have been here for months and the living conditions aren't any better for them. Laila and her children fled Al-Fasher days before the takeover. She says she and her children found a roof to sleep under, but no blankets and little to eat. We got some food when we got here. We go and get wood and use it to cook the food here, but the food is very little. Now I can't even feed my baby and they don't have any milk to give her and there are no health centers that can provide her and us with supplements. I have to go to the hospital to get milk for the youngest, but I can't leave my seven other kids. Faiza Yousef arrived two months ago. She and her family were displaced several times before they came. We don't get food distributions. My husband goes to work as a bus conductor to get some money for us to eat. I'm sick and there is no treatment here. I had hoped to travel for treatment, but we barely have enough to get by. Sometimes we sleep hungry. More displaced people are expected to arrive in Al-Dabba. Sudan's government had promised to move those here to a bigger camp. While it means moving once again, those here say they hope they'll find better living conditions. There has been a sharp escalation in bloodshed in the conflict since Rapid Support Forces fighters captured the city of al-Fashir.
