We would go into a showroom and ask to borrow clothes and they would say, what's the name of the show? Sex in the City. And they would be like, get out of here. What is that, porno? It was in fact a fashion-forward TV series, which would go on for six seasons, spawn two feature films, and now HBO's reboot, and Just Like That. She's wearing flats. That is the most desperate put-down I've ever heard. Costume designer Molly Rogers has been there from the beginning, originally working alongside Patricia Field. Pat always called the show a moving fashion magazine, which I think it really was. In the years since the first pilot episode, one character in particular has undergone a big transformation. I feel like Miranda is a bit of an unsung character who's kind of gotten her flowers a little bit over the past few years. Michael Patrick King, the writer and the creator and the executive producer, said, she's searching. She's going through a marital upheaval, a sexual identity kind of upheaval. She's kind of all over the place. In the original series, lawyer Miranda Hobbs was a fashion outlier. It was the kind of pattern and color that no one else on the show was wearing. Miranda was before her time. Menswear has been a pillar of Miranda's looks since the 90s, and now this trademark tailoring is making a comeback. Pat was searching for something lawyer-like that looked a little fresh, and to skew it towards menswear, like throw a tie on her or button the shirt all the way up. It made it crispy, and she wasn't in, you know, some dowdy uniform. We were taking in the nape of the neck on normal blouses. Cynthia wore it well, with her red hair that was always kind of cropped short. In And Just Like That, Miranda has been experimenting more with her look, but Molly still loves to sneak in a suit for old time's sake. When you put Cynthia in a suit now, what are you kind of looking for? The suit is a lot more tailored, so it's like feminine menswear. You see her shape more. I don't have to put her in corporate black or navy or gray. I had her go out with Carrie and Charlotte in a very light pistachio spring pant and jacket, kind of Annie Hall-ish. So there's just a lot more to play around with now. In terms of what's next for Miranda, Molly predicts calmer waters and a stronger sense of self for the character. She got through her divorce. She's making her way more calmly in the world, and I think she reflects that contentment in her clothes. And yes, it's a little heightened because it's television. I don't want to bore myself or bore her or bore anybody else.
