In 2024, Europe recorded its second highest number of tropical nights, with southeastern regions such as southern Greece, Italy, and western Turkey experiencing the most significant increases—up to 55 more tropical nights than average in some areas.

While much of southeastern Europe faced a surge in these warm nights, 38% of the continent actually saw slightly below average numbers. Early summer in 2025 continued this trend, with areas like Spain recording substantially more tropical nights than usual. Experts warn that persistently high night temperatures can increase health risks, as the body struggles to recover from daytime heat, potentially leading to symptoms such as increased heart rate, dizziness, and heat stroke.

Over the past few decades, the number of tropical nights in Europe has been rising, with the rate of warming more than double the global average over the last 30 years. In 2024, Europe saw the second highest number of tropical nights on record, the southeast was particularly affected. In southern Greece, some areas experienced up to 55 more tropical nights than average. Much of Italy saw up to 50 additional tropical nights, while western Turkey recorded up to 40 more. Some regions in Croatia, Serbia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria experienced up to 36 extra tropical nights. By contrast, 38% of Europe saw a slightly below average number of tropical nights. In June and early July of 2025, many areas across the European continent experienced more tropical nights than usual for that period. Parts of Spain, for example, recorded up to 24 tropical nights in June, which is 18 more than the average for that month. High night temperatures can pose health risks, as the body may not recover from daytime heat stress as it would normally. Symptoms of heat stress include increased heart rate, dizziness and, in severe cases, heat stroke.
