As Utah's municipal elections approach their final hours, voter turnout remains low, with Washington County reporting about 25 percent participation and Salt Lake County at 18.5 percent. These figures are significantly lower than the 90 percent turnout seen during the previous presidential election.

Several important local races are being decided, including mayoral contests in St. George, Hurricane, and Santa Clara. Election officials are urging voters who still have their ballots to use local drop boxes, as mailing them will not ensure timely delivery.

It's the last hours of the municipal elections throughout the state, and judging by the turnout numbers, not many people have voted. We're sitting at about 25 percent, so pretty low. We're probably going to see hopefully a lot more today and tomorrow, but yeah. Ryan Sullivan oversees elections in Washington County. He says that 25 percent number compares to a 90 percent turnout in last November's presidential election. And Washington County isn't alone in the state for low turnout. Salt Lake County Clerk Lanny Chapman tells us they've had 18.5 percent turnout. I don't really know what it is that these same voters are getting a ballot, and they just don't feel like coming and turning it in during a municipal election, which is sad because these are our local elections where you could get a meeting or have a sit-down with some of these leaders that could potentially affect your daily lives. All the cities and towns in southern Utah are deciding city council seats Tuesday, and three will decide who's mayor. St. George is choosing between incumbent Michelle Randall, seeking a second term, and city council member Jimmy Hughes. In other local mayoral races, Hurricane will close out what has been a contentious race over the removal by the incumbent mayor of campaign signs during the primary. Mayor Nanette Billings is being challenged by council member Clark Fawcett. And for the first time in nearly two decades, Santa Clara is picking a new mayor. Voters will decide between council members Ben Shakespeare and Jarrett Waite after Rick Rosenberg chose not to run after 19 years in office. We talked with some voters dropping off their ballots Monday. What would you say to those who don't get in on time? They're silly. They have the freedom to choose, and if they don't take that opportunity, my opinion is they can't complain about anything. And just a reminder, if you haven't mailed out your ballots by now, your best bet at this point is to get to one of the local drop boxes. Yeah, I definitely would not mail your ballot in if you still have it. It just won't make it in time. The postmark does not matter anymore, so totally out the window.
