A judge in Cincinnati has ordered the Bohemian Hookah Bar to close after a lawsuit filed by the city in response to ongoing public safety issues, including street takeovers, illegal alcohol sales, and violence in the area. The closure follows community complaints and efforts by city officials, who also passed an ordinance regulating hookah bar hours citywide.

Attempts to obtain a comment from the bar's ownership were unsuccessful, with a listed defendant declining to speak until consulting legal counsel. The judge's order requires the bar to be closed and vacated on or before November 14.

We first covered street takeovers around the Bohemian Hookah Bar in mid-July. They see some people selling alcohol out of their cars, other people fighting in the streets, and then some using guns to intimidate one another. Outcries to get the bars shuttered led to the city suing them, and now this judge's order. The bar will close. Delating news for CliftonTown meeting president Ben Pantoja. I'm very excited about it. It's been a headache for the business district for the last two years. Pantoja gives credit to city councilman and current candidate Mark Jeffries for working to shut the place down in the wake of our stories showing surveillance videos of the problem. When you first saw those videos, what went through you? It's jarring. It was jarring. And I think that was the sense of a lot of folks in our neighborhood here in Clifton. Jeffries says council passed an ordinance regulating hookah bar hours citywide to help with issues like this, and he's happy a judge ruled in the city's favor. For Charter Party council candidate Steve Gooden, however, how do you feel? You know, I wish I felt better about it, to be honest with you, because we started on this issue. We started beating this drum in August of 2023. Gooden says it never should have gotten to this point for the city to act. Why does something like this take such a significant amount of time? Yeah, I mean, I'm always today, today, today. How can we do it faster? You know, but the reality is the law sometimes is very deliberate. I went into the bar to try to get the owner's side of all of this. An employee told me that he doesn't speak English and called MJ Drosset, listed as a defendant in the city's lawsuit. Drosset initially told me that there was no plan to close the bar. When I read him the judge's order, he asked me to send it to him. When I did, he said he needed to speak to his attorney and declined to talk further until he did. Now, the judge's final order says that the bar must be closed and vacated on or before November 14th.
