Health officials warn that measles can be contracted through shared airspace up to two hours after an infected person has left. The outbreak is attributed to lower vaccination rates and misinformation, and is part of a broader national trend, with Canada reporting over 5,000 cases this year and losing its measles-free status.

The province is facing a new measles outbreak. Eight cases have been reported so far, mostly in the Lanondières, Laurentians, Laval and Montreal areas. After each confirmed case, there is a public health investigation to determine the source of contamination. It shows that people who visited a Walmart store in Saint-Léonard between December 9th and 13th, an Adonis market in Anjou on December 12th, the emergency room of Maison Lèvres-Rosemont hospital on December 13th and a pediatric clinic in Saint-Eustache might have been exposed. If somebody with measles is in a room, leaves that room, and somebody who is susceptible enters that room within two hours, they can get measles. And somebody may say, this is ridiculous, I was in Walmart, for instance, and my child was standing beside me all the time, we never came in contact with anybody. It's the shared airspace. Babies under one, pregnant women who are not vaccinated against measles and people with weakened immune systems are at risk of complications. Ruben says one of the main causes of the outbreak is a lower vaccination rate. Mistrust in vaccination, social media that promotes certain beliefs without good justification. The outbreak in the province is part of a broader resurgence of measles across Canada. More than 5,000 cases have been reported this year alone, particularly in Ontario and Alberta. That has caused the country to lose its measles-free status. From 1998 to 2024, there was an average of 91 measles cases reported each year.
