Actor and author Henry Winkler spoke about his latest television project, 'Hazardous History,' which examines America's past instances of recklessness, such as the original 7-Up formula containing lithium and the historical practice of mailing children under 50 pounds. and joining me now live is actor, author, Henry Winkler. Henry, welcome, and thank you, first of all, for doing this, sir. Welcome. It is a pleasure, Mr. Henry. How are you? I am fantastic. Let's start with this show on the History Channel. I couldn't understand why it was called Hazardous History, so I asked you why, and you started telling me about the soda drink 7-Up. Let's start there. Okay, so 7-Up was born 1927. Bubbly, refreshing, and the tagline was, we're going to take the edge off. And the reason is, it was laced with lithium. Wow, is that legal? I mean, what does that do to people? Isn't that kind of dangerous or hazardous? There are so many things that I have found out about the way we have lived and live on this show, Hazardous History. One, you know, for 13 cents, if your child was under 50 pounds, you could mail them through the mail down the street to their grandparents. What? Did people really do that? People actually did that. They started then sending their child across the country as long as the child was under 50 pounds. Oh my God. Who's feeding them? And what if it took a couple of days? They're in a box, were there air holes? And what about lost mail? Yeah, what if they got lost? That is crazy. Okay, I'm going to make sure that I watch the show now, and I want everybody out there to check it out when everywhere it's streaming. Henry, what about your books? Because the latest one is out, right? It's coming out in September, I should say. You told me off the air that you're dyslexic, but hold up the book. And so as you talk about this new book, yeah, Detective Duck. All right, so I am in the bottom 3% academically of everybody in America. It is the wiring in the brain. One out of five children on the planet have some sort of learning challenge. And it was very hard to get hired after the Fonz. So I asked a friend and I said, what should I do? And he said, write books for children about your learning challenges. And I said, well, I can't do that. I'm learning challenged. And this will be, newest book will be our 40th novel. So what I learned is you can do anything you set your mind to. Wow, that's beautiful. So how do you do 40 books? How do you remember your lines as an actor? I didn't know anything about this. And it's so inspiring to hear. You told me your wife helps you write the books. A woman by the name of Lynn Oliver and I are partners. I met her for lunch. We then sent the proposal to my agent at the time, who is still my agent, Esther Newberg. And she said, I don't do children's books. And I said, well, it's always the first time. And she sent it. Hank Zipzer was the character. And now we have Detective Duck, who dreams about being a detective and is also an environmentalist. And we've gotten great reviews. She's been on the bestseller list two times now. And the third one comes out in September. That's great, September. And Kirkus just gave it a wonderful review. Last thing, you also really love music. You're very eclectic and we've talked about that. And I love Sinatra. And you told me about meeting him for the first time. So starting when I was about 14, in the wee small hours of the morning, I would write love letters to girls who didn't want anything to do with me, listening to Frank Sinatra. Then I took Ron Howard with me and we watched him in Las Vegas. We went to a show and I introduced about six people to him. And as we were leaving, he said goodbye to all six people by name. The next time I saw him was at the Bicentennial of America. We were at the Statue of Liberty and we were in tents waiting to be called to go on camera. And he couldn't see what was going on. So he took a steak knife and he cut a picture window in the tent so that he could see what was going on. It went from renting the tent to buying the tent. Frank would get what he wanted. He was a tough guy, but I think the lesson is he was a nice guy who remembered everyone's name. You're like that as well, Henry Winkler.
