Former heavyweight boxer Joe Bugner, who went up against the likes of Muhammad Ali, has died at age 75 at an aged care home in Brisbane.

Joe Bugner, a former heavyweight boxing champion, has died at the age of 75 in a Brisbane care home. Bugner, who fought notable opponents including Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali in the 1970s, was respected for his endurance and skill, never being knocked out by either fighter. 

After retiring in 1976, Bugner moved to Australia, where he continued to box sporadically and became known as 'Aussie Joe'. He won the World Boxing Federation title at age 48 and was celebrated for his achievements both in and out of the ring. Bugner is remembered not only for his boxing prowess but also for his humility, generosity, and dedication to his family.

Some said he was bigger than boxing. Hello Aussie Joe Buckner! The former heavyweight champ passed away at age 75 in a Brisbane care home. But Joe Buckner's life achievements transcend time. That was good, clean punching. Another good left by Buckner. In his prime in the 1970s, he took on two of the greats back to back, holding his own against Joe Frazier. Look at that exchange. Two heavyweights going toe to toe here. And fighting Muhammad Ali not once, but twice. The Buckner Shuffle! Although he lost all three bouts based on points, he won bragging rights as the only man who both fought, but neither could knock out. He was able to box well into an age where most fighters are just got their feet up on the rocking chair. He retired from boxing in 76 and moved to Australia a decade later, making sporadic comebacks to the sport and claiming the name Aussie Joe. At the age of 48, he took down James Bonecrusher Smith to claim the World Boxing Federation title. We are the first heavyweight champion of Australia ever. And I'm very proud. Out of his 83 fights, he won 69 with a total of 41 knockouts. But his greatest achievement... If you asked Joe, he would say his marriage to his beautiful wife. He's such a beautiful family man. To those who knew him, he won't be remembered by his tough exterior, but rather his humble nature. Anyone in boxing that needed a favour, Joe was there. And, of course, his sharp wit. Muhammad Ali said to Joe, "'Dude, you're so ugly. You're one of the ugliest guys I've ever seen.' And Joe turned around to him and said, "'If you think I'm ugly, you should see my sister.'" Buckner's legacy will live on through generations of people he inspired in and out of the ring. Rubbed off on all of us and made us not just better fighters, but made us better people.
