Guinea's military leader, Mamadi Doumbouya, has officially entered the race for the country's presidential election scheduled for December 28. This marks the first presidential vote since Doumbouya took power in a 2021 coup. Despite initially pledging not to run, Doumbouya's candidacy is now permitted under a new constitution approved in a recent referendum.

His decision has been criticized by the Force Vive coalition of opposition parties and citizen groups, especially amid reports of a crackdown on dissent and the exclusion of two major opposition parties from the contest. The Supreme Court is set to review all candidacies and will announce the official list of candidates by November 13.

The Force Vive, a coalition of opposition political parties and citizen movements, have denounced his decision to stand. Under his rule, the junta has cracked down on peaceful dissent, including attempts to mobilize people towards a return to democratic rule. While about 10 other candidates have submitted their applications, two of the biggest opposition parties have been excluded from the contest, raising concerns about the election's credibility. The Supreme Court will now examine the validity of the applications and publish the official list of candidates by the 13th of November.
