Shalee Super tells The National about the moment she came face to face with a grizzly bear before it destroyed her tent in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park in B.C.

A travel blogger camping in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park, British Columbia, recounted a close encounter with a grizzly bear. While her husband was away climbing, the blogger heard noises outside her tent and saw a bear’s claw touch the tent. She used bear spray and fled, allowing the bear to focus on the tent and not her.

The bear spent about ten minutes damaging the tent and its contents before leaving the area. The blogger later returned to find her sleeping pad and pillows ripped, but noted that the bear ignored a peanut butter and chocolate sandwich left inside. She was unharmed and left the campsite after retrieving her belongings.

First thing that went through my mind was just, okay, this is happening. My husband was going to climb Mount Assiniboine in Assiniboine Provincial Park. And I was hanging out at camp and I heard something outside my tent. Instantly when I heard that noise, I knew. The shadow of a grizzly bear claw kind of reaches out and touches the side of the tent. It's fight or flight time. I just hit the bear spray for a couple of seconds. And you know, I was like, take the tent. I don't care what's in the tent. As long as he seemed more interested in the tent than me. I ran across the river and the marsh. He messed with the tent for probably like 10 minutes. And then I waited until I could hear him in the woods across the valley for a while after that encounter. Eventually it was far enough away for me to feel comfortable to go back and retrieve my things and then get the heck out of there. Sleeping pad, pillows were all ripped. I would never like to be that close to a grizzly again. Okay, so how does this happen? Why was the bear so invested in the tent? It seems she might've had a peanut butter and chocolate sandwich in the tent, but interestingly enough, he left that. Everything else was trash, but wasn't interested in the peanut butter and chocolate. I would have been, but not the bear.
