Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis has met with Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the leader of eastern Libya, in Benghazi. The meeting is part of Greece's efforts to restore relations that have deteriorated due to Libya's 2019 agreement with Turkey and an increase in irregular migration from eastern Libya.

During the talks, Gerapetritis and Haftar addressed issues including migration, maritime boundaries, and bilateral cooperation. The Greek minister emphasized the countries' shared historical ties and commitment to international law. Gerapetritis is also scheduled to meet officials from Libya's western-based Government of National Unity. Libya remains divided between rival administrations in the east and west, each supported by different militias and foreign governments.

On July 15, Gerapetritis will visit Tripoli to hold meetings with officials of the Government of National Unity. Libya is governed by two rival administrations in the east and west, backed by militias and foreign governments.
