The US government shutdown has entered its second week, with federal workers facing the threat of permanent layoffs. While no official firings have occurred, the president has publicly warned that job losses could happen if the shutdown persists, placing blame on Democrats for the ongoing impasse.

Negotiations between the House and Senate remain stalled, with both Republican and Democratic proposals expected to fail in upcoming votes. As the shutdown continues, public opinion on which party is responsible may shift, but for now, most blame is directed at Republicans and the president, with Democrats also facing criticism.

CBS News Senior White House and political correspondent, Ed O'Keefe, has more for us now on the government shutdown side of what's happening in the nation's capital. Ed, good morning to you. You know, last week we heard the president effectively threaten Democrats and say if the shutdown hits, federal workers could be permanently let go. Where does that stand today? From what we can tell, it doesn't appear as if people have been officially fired yet. That's right. It's still there, but no action taken yet on permanent layoffs of federal employees. The president spent the weekend trying to flip those numbers that you showed earlier in terms of who's to blame, while most right now blame Republicans and the president. The Democrats come in second there, and he'd like to see Democrats start taking this on the chin a little more, and is likely to spend most of this week relentlessly attacking them for holding up government funding and government operations. He was asked about it on Sunday. Let's take a listen to a sampling of how he's arguing against the shutdown. It's all because of the Democrats. The Democrats are causing the loss of a lot of jobs with their, it's a shutdown. It's their shutdown. So again, that's his way of threatening the layoffs and blaming Democrats if it happens. It hasn't happened. And the president has a way of relentlessly repeating things that eventually really bake into the national psyche or understanding. So we'll see if in the coming days we start to see polling that puts more of the blame on Democrats. Historically, it's the party that's not in power that's holding things up that ultimately gets the blame, but that isn't how it's at least started out so far, Errol. Remember, this thing could go a long time. House and Senate still in an impasse. Senate's at the vote tonight again on Republican and Democratic proposals. They're not expected to go anywhere. Speaker Johnson says he's not bringing the House back until the Senate votes to reopen the government. Could be a while.
