There's TikTok and Instagram, then there's reality. Hordes of holidayers are descending on the lake of Eibsee in the German Alps, many of them having seen it on viral social media posts. Having run the gauntlet of crowded buses, traffic jams and vanishing parking spots, most agree the reward is worth it. We didn't think there would be so many people, but it's really beautiful. One thing that's always a problem, of course, is that there are a lot of people here. But it's easily accessible from Munich and a fantastic place to spend a day. But it's not relaxing at all for the local municipality. Infrastructure is strained, rubbish bins are constantly full and drivers ignore signs saying there are no spots left for parking. People often suggest setting up a barrier system before you reach the top of the mountain. This is not legally permissible in Germany, as things stand. The nearby town of Greinau has 3,600 residents and 1,700 guests a night on average. Is the spot a victim of its own success? You'll have to visit to find out.
