German Chancellor Frederick Merz has indicated that the war in Ukraine may persist for a long time, stressing that a rapid conclusion should not occur at the expense of Ukraine's independence. In a public interview, Merz reiterated that supporting Ukraine's defense against Russia remains a top priority for Germany.

He highlighted that Germany has provided or pledged approximately €40 billion in military support since the conflict began. Merz also noted that Berlin, along with other Western countries, continues to support diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending the war.

We will try to end it as quickly as possible, but certainly not at the expense of the capitulation of Ukraine. You can end the war tomorrow, when Ukraine capitulates, gives up and the country loses its independence. But then the next country will be there the day after tomorrow, and then we will be there the day after tomorrow. That's not an option. Germany, a key backer of Ukraine, has delivered or pledged military support worth around €40 billion since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. In recent months, Berlin, alongside other Western nations, has been rallying behind a renewed diplomatic push to bring the war to an end.

Belgium joins the ranks of Australia, France, Canada and the UK, all who have pledged to recognize a Palestinian state at the UNGA next week in a bid to ramp up pressure on the Israeli government to end the war in Gaza.
