A recent survey by CPA Canada indicates that 40% of younger Canadians, including Gen Z and millennials, are spending more than older generations during the holiday season. Despite rising costs, retail sales have increased by 1.5% including inflation, with many shoppers seeking deals at thrift and dollar stores.

Retailers note that the final days before Christmas are crucial for business, though shoppers appear more intentional and budget-conscious this year. The holiday season reflects a variety of shopping habits, from last-minute purchases to careful budgeting, as consumers prioritize meaningful gifts.

Gen Z, millennials spending more than older generations

It's hours to go before Christmas morning and some are still trying to check off their Christmas shopping list. I'm shopping on the 24th right now so money is less of an issue and more about getting the things that I want. Definitely shopping more. I am someone that definitely goes on Amazon for some quick things but I love going in store to look at to look at things as well. I'm spending more than the last couple years. We don't want to spend a lot of money this year because everything is getting expensive. But not everyone is spending the same way. The split between the generations is showing up in the numbers too. According to a survey conducted by CPA Canada, 40% of younger Canadians are outspending older generations this holiday season. I think we're going to have an okay holiday season from a sales perspective. Despite some of the hesitation reported by older Canadians, this retail analyst says retail sales were up by 1.5% including inflation. People are buying more at thrift stores. People are buying more, they're channeling down to dollar stores, to other lower priced stores. Local retailers say this final stretch before Christmas is critical. It definitely feels a bit softer. We're really grateful that Christmas is a time of year where people will come back and shop. It's definitely a time of year that we rely on. But Quist feels this year shoppers are more careful about where they're putting their money. I think people are being a lot more intentional this year. They're thinking about what will bring people joy. But when it comes to managing the holiday pressure... Spend within your means, don't overdo it, don't try to impress people. From careful budgeting to last minute splurges, this holiday season shows there's no one way to shop. Just different priorities and a shared hope that the gifts bring some joy.
