September no longer marks the beginning of a new school year in Gaza. It marks another chapter of survival. Israeli bombardment has damaged or destroyed nearly 90 percent of schools across the Strip and hundreds of thousands of young people are missing out on an education.

In Gaza, the new school year has begun for some children in makeshift tents after widespread destruction of schools and homes. Many students, like 10-year-old Lamadib, have lost nearly all their belongings and now attend classes without uniforms, bags, or basic supplies, as families struggle to afford replacements and local stores remain closed.

Teachers are determined to continue lessons despite these challenges, but hundreds of thousands of children are still unable to attend school due to displacement, distance, and lack of transportation. For the third consecutive year, many children in Gaza are deprived of education, with some reaching the age of eight without ever entering a classroom.

Gaza’s school year begins in tents

When 10-year-old Lamadib and her family were displaced to western Gaza, all she managed to hang on to was an old stationary set. On Monday, she lined up with other students for the first time in nearly two years. Not in a school, but in a tent. My mother registered us at this camp. It is a good chance for us to get education because almost all of the schools and houses have been leveled by the Israelis. The principal says teachers are determined to give classes, but many students arrive with nothing because their homes were bombed and their families can't afford to replace what they lost. Before the war, our students used to go to school wearing their new school uniforms with school bags and notebooks. Now, they don't have uniforms, bags or anything because people don't have money to buy them and there are no stationary stores. These children are the lucky ones. Hundreds of thousands of others aren't going to school. So many students can't come to school because they live very far away and there is no transport to bring them, and also because of the ongoing displacement from place to place. The school situation is very difficult and very tough. An entire generation is trapped between rubble and despair, their classrooms replaced by loss, their future stolen by war. For the third year in a row, the school year is not beginning in Gaza. Hundreds of thousands of children here are deprived of the right to education.
