The declaration was based on three key indicators: at least 20% of households facing extreme food shortages, 30% of children suffering acute malnutrition, and a significant daily death rate due to starvation.

Israel has rejected the IPC's findings, accusing the organization of manipulating data and lowering the threshold for famine declaration. The IPC responded by clarifying its methodology and defending its use of established malnutrition indicators. The situation underscores the ongoing challenges in providing humanitarian aid to Gaza.

After more than a year of warnings, the world's leading authority on food crises officially confirmed a famine in Gaza on August 22nd. A famine that the UN said was man-made and entirely avoidable. It is a famine that we could have prevented if we had been allowed. Yet food stacks up at borders because of systematic obstruction by Israel. It is a famine within a few hundred metres of food, in a fertile land. The findings were released by the IPC, a trusted hunger monitor backed by the UN. It came to its conclusions after three key indicators that determined famine were met in the Gaza Strip. At least 20% of households face an extreme lack of food, at least 30% of children suffer acute malnutrition and two adults or four children per 10,000 people starve to death every day. But the report was outright rejected by the Israeli government. It accused the IPC of fabricating and cherry-picking data, breaking its own rules and hiding contradictory data. The IPC report is forged for political purposes. No doubt the IPC manipulated and ignored data, broke its own rules. Amongst other accusations, Israel claimed the IPC reduced the threshold of children suffering malnutrition needed to declare a famine from 30% to 15%. On Saturday, the IPC issued a response stating that the 15% threshold, which relies on measuring a child's mid-upper arm circumference, has been one of two ways to measure acute malnutrition since 2019. Israel also claimed the IPC hid an indicator showing only 12% of households faced starvation. But the IPC replied that five out of six available indicators showed that more than 20% of households face an extreme lack of food.
