Many, like Salim Abu Amir, rely on fishing not only as a source of income but also as a family tradition passed down through generations.

The industry, once a cornerstone of Gaza's economy and food supply, is now struggling to survive as fishermen are often forbidden from going to sea and lack access to necessary equipment. Despite these challenges, local fishermen continue to risk their safety to maintain their livelihoods and preserve their cultural heritage.

Targeting a meal for his family, he's known as the Beast, and he hunts in the depths of the sea. People here call me the Beast because I managed to catch a fish that was more than a meter and a half long. It's rare, but the truth is, I've caught many big fish. Freediving is in Salim Abu Amir's blood, he learned from his father at a very young age. It's a skill that has been passed down through several generations, and a way to support his family. He tells me that before Israel's war, Gaza's fishermen sailed far out to sea, where the waters were rich. Conditions have been imposed on us since the beginning of the war and continue to this day, but I have no source of livelihood. I can't just sit at home waiting for someone to support me. Salim is not alone, fishing was once a vital source of both income and food in Gaza, but the industry has been crippled. Fishermen are one of the most exposed to danger, often the occupation forbids them from going to the sea, and freedivers cannot get their diving gear, which affects their ability to work. After months of displacement, the Beast is back home and hungry for a catch. Good luck Salim, good luck. This is as far as I go, but Salim will dive down, searching for fish he can later sell at the market. For fishermen like him, the sea is not just a place of work, it's a lifeline. I'm determined to pass on my profession to my children, it's a pleasure and a hobby. Fishing relieves stress and provides an income. After hours of diving, Salim emerges from the sea with a lucky catch, ready to sail and support his family. For Gaza's fishermen, the struggle is not just for a living, it's about keeping a centuries old connection to the sea alive.
