Beaches along the coast of Gaza City have turned from areas of enjoyment to crowded camps for displaced families, forced from their homes.

Gaza City's coastal areas, once known for recreation and relaxation, have become overcrowded tent camps for thousands of displaced Palestinians. The beaches, previously a destination for families seeking respite from urban life, are now lined with makeshift shelters as ongoing conflict and displacement orders continue.

Residents describe severe hardships, including a lack of clean water, inadequate shelter, and health issues. The area, now densely packed with tents and people, highlights the daily struggles faced by those who have lost their homes and livelihoods due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Gaza City beaches turn from leisure spots to overcrowded tent camps

22 months ago this area used to be a favorite spot for people just going out. This is Gaza Coastal Road, a seaside road or better known as the Rashid Road connecting the entire Gaza Strip from north to south. Family used to come here for a brief walk and the children played by the waves here and for others it was just a moment for fresh air away from a crowded city. Today this road and the entire beachfront tell a different story. What was once a place of leisure and fun for many of the families here taking a moment away from a crowded city have turned into a lost refuge for people. Thousands of displaced Palestinians have set up their makeshift tents right at the beach frontier off the coastal road and there are still many more are still pouring into the area as displacement orders are still taking place. We're standing on the shores of Gaza. This beach used to be a place of relaxation, tourism and joy, a space where people could release their stress. Today it has become a place of refuge, a site for makeshift camps. The sand, once a symbol of leisure, has now become a source of illness for children and all of those displaced. I've been displaced here for four months. There's a severe water crisis and the tents, I don't even have a proper tent. Mine is just a plastic sheet. I have a disabled son inside and we're exhausted from living on sand. I suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure and very poor vision. I'm a widow with no one to support me. I walk barefoot on the sand. I don't even have clothes. We're exhausted. We die a hundred times a day while still alive. Well, you know, a brief walk on this beach, something that used to be very simple, now it's very impossible. The sand is crowded with many of the tents, plastic sheets and exhausted families who are struggling on a daily basis to survive with barely any food, water or privacy. As you see, all of these tents are next to each other and it's increasingly, as waves of displaced people are ending up in this area, becoming very hard to walk around and see what's going on. It's very difficult, increasing the difficulties and the hardship that displaced people are experiencing on a daily basis in this particular area. Every minute here you see a family that has already lost their homes or a child who hasn't been in school for months or a mother wondering what to feed her children tomorrow. This place has turned from a place of leisure, a place of fun for families to gather around and to breathe fresh air into a last refuge for them, a shelter from the unpredictable falling bombs that have already leveled the whole city.
