The protest, organized by the FNSEA and Jeune Agriculture unions, was peaceful and aimed to draw lawmakers' attention to the financial struggles facing the agricultural sector.

Farmers voiced concerns that the EU-Mercosur deal would introduce unfair competition from South American imports, produced under different standards and at lower costs. Protesters called for immediate government action to safeguard France's food security and protect local producers from being undercut by cheaper foreign products.

Well, also in France, farmers rolled into Paris again today to protest low incomes and the European Union Mercosur trade deal. Some 350 tractors made their way toward the French Parliament. French farmers say they're demanding concrete and immediate action to defend France's food security. Ellen Gainsford sent us the latest from the Assemblée Nationale. I'm here in central Paris in front of the Assemblée Nationale, that's the French Parliament. And I have to say that it's been quite a surreal sight here this morning. There have been rows upon rows of tractors, really as far as I can see, going along the Quai d'Orsay. That's the road that borders the Seine here. And there have also been hundreds of farmers milling around. The atmosphere has been quite convivial. There has been a police presence here today, but I have to say there's not been any tensions that I've seen. And of course, the protest has been called by these two big farming unions, the FNSEA and the Jeune Agriculture, or Young Farmers Organization. And I've been able to speak to representatives of both of those unions today. And well, one message that's coming through loud and clear is that they feel that it's financially untenable to be a farmer in France now. And that's why they're here in this really symbolic location right in front of the House of Parliament to directly call on lawmakers for change. And I spoke to another farmer, a cereal farmer from the FNSEA, and he told me he brought his sleeping bag here today, so he's ready to stay for the long haul if needs be, if that's what is demanded, for there to be change. And well, of course, the main reason that farmers are angry here today is that Mercosur trade pact that got the go-ahead at the end of last week. And that's between the EU and the bloc of South American countries. And well, farmers, French farmers, feel that it's going to be unfair competition for them and that it could potentially lead to a lot of cheaper foreign products that are held to different standards in both terms of food hygiene and that are able to be produced at a lower cost because the cost of living in these countries are cheaper. And French farmers are worrying about these products flooding the European market and really undercutting them in terms of price.

Analysts say the discussions could be pivotal in clarifying U.S. intentions, easing tensions and reinforcing commitments to Greenland’s sovereignty in the face of strategic interests from Washington.
