Ohad Ben-Ami returned to his home in Kibbutz Be'eri in southern Israel on Sunday. It is here where Ohad and his wife Raz were seized by Hamas-led militants on October 7, 2023, and taken back into Gaza along with some 250 other hostages. The assault, in which about 1,200 people were also killed, according to Israeli tallies, triggered a massive military retaliation that has killed more than 67,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to health authorities there. Ben-Ami's wife was released in a ceasefire deal in November 2023. He was then released along with two other hostages in February this year. The trio's grand appearance shocked Israel, drawing comparisons with survivors of Nazi concentration camps. Ben-Ami says they suffered terribly during captivity, experiencing hunger, poor sanitation and abuse. But after meeting U.S. President Donald Trump, he voiced optimism about a new ceasefire and hostage release deal brokered by the U.S. Three weeks ago, in the United States, in Washington, we met President Trump, and I asked him personally to knock on the table, as he knocked on my table, that I get out, to make a deal, and now it seems like there is a hope because the Arab countries and Israel and Hamas agreed to this deal. It will take a few days, but I'm very optimistic, and I'm waiting to see them. Ben-Ami said he was disappointed with Israel's leadership, saying he felt abandoned by his government. Now he is appealing to them to reach an agreement. I ask my government to do the deal, and take this thing with your two arms, hand this deal. You must get all the hostages out. They are in a very, very bad physical and mental condition. He also called on Israelis to take to the streets and keep pressing for a deal. From my people, from the Israeli people, Israeli nation, I'm proud of them. They didn't sit, they didn't be quiet, they go out to the street, they fight on us. This made the pressure, also this pressure reached to President Trump, and this, all this thing, so I'm here thanks to the Israeli people.
